Congratulations! What a story!
I have been waiting for my GC application to be approved (marriage-based) for over 2 years now and haven't heard anything. People are suggesting me to go the Writ of Mandumus route...
Do you mind telling me approximately how much it cost you to go through the Writ of Mandumus process?

How can we figure out the net assets from a 1120S tax return? I have the copy of company tax return with me and I am "accounting challenged". Can some one please help me figure out the net assets, so that I can answer my ability to pay RFE.
Thanks
Company tax returns can only show the NET INCOME . You need an Audited Financial Statement prepared by a CPA to show NET ASSETS

I don't like idea of making IV a commercial-type business. IV is for legal immigrants and it should be funded by Legal Immigrants, however, practically its not that easy as it sounds, and more importantly its not working enough for IV to operate and generate results that we are waiting for.
Problem is not that we dont have money as small as $20, issue is we dont want to pay. The reasons could be a)- we dont understand importance of IV, b)- dont trust IV fund management, c)- love freebies, d)- dont have money e)- everything else.
Lets talk about e)- there are 31000 reasons not to donate to IV. Well no matter how hard we push there will be people who will never contribute. I met quite a few who been saying yeah for quite sometime and visit IV almost daily but have not contributed $0.01. Cant help them who cant help themselves.
d)- dont have money: smells fishy, we are Hi-Tech workers, get paid really good and cant donate $20, I dont buy this idea. Better explain me next time.
c)- love freebies: its great concept, I like it too, but when IV is fighting for us, the whole legal immigrant community, cant we donate $20 for our own future. Lets take it as a lottery, we buy ticket, we may win and may not win, compare it to IV, we donate to IV, IV may be able to resolve issue before we even reach there in GC process (just like name check), and IV may not help retrogration, but still we come to forum, get information about process, discuss our own case, get seniors/gurus review of our own GC case/issues. We cant go wrong with that. Its doable, just $20 for all this.
b)- IV fund management: well IV has 25000 dedicated registered members, WOW, but way more than that IV has un-registered unknown number of enemies. Exposing everything on web is not a great idea, its like playing poker with your cards open. IV registration process is very simple and hence ANYONE can join and get sensitive info very easily and may use it against us. To protect that info IV is working on local chapters, local chapter registration is based on personal interaction, almost guarantees us that member is really legal immigrant. Once we are local chapter member then you get all such info in personal Inbox. You can see, verify, and discuss IV spending, see all transparent at this state chapter level. Just join them, no fee, its free!
a)- dont understand importance of IV: this is biggest single factor so far, folks who are in their 1-3 years of H1, assumes that by the time they will come to advanced stage of GC everything will smooth by then, as of today there is no reason for them to think about it. One very huge mistake they are making of thinking that GC queue will decrease when they get in line. It wont. It will keep increasing exponentially simply because number of cases come in line are far more than number of cases exit the line.
Delta = (# of new cases in the line) (# of cases exiting from line)
Trust me this Delta is getting bigger and bigger for you. Donating to IV may not seem important right now, think again you are going to invest in your future. IV may resolve this issues before you reach there. Ultimately saving you 2-3 yeas in GC process, you can earn more $$ in those 2-3 years and enjoy GC benefit too.
Wow, all this explaining to get $20 from each member. Please point out if there are other reasons for not donating to IV.

I am married too, but i only said that there are other easier paths aswell.
Regarding working late, i am a fulltime employee with H1-B and never came to office before 10:00AM and stayed after 6:00PM and never ever worked weekends. Mine can be an exceptional case, but what iam saying is, your relationship with your manager is important. This can make a lot of difference in your lives.
As long as you deliver what is expected of you, you can even work 4 days a week and get paid for 40 hrs per week.
I don't know, if we are deviating from our main discussion agenda started by LogicLife.
--sri
I am sorry srikondoji but i have to disagree on some points.
Yes you can do that. But you work late coz people Not dependant on H1B's can leave on their scheduled times coz if they get laid off, they wont be deported if they dont get a job in 10 days. Sure there is No Formal distinction on paper between H1B's and Non H1Bs, but it is assumed that since ur application depends on the employer (entirely), you will put urself to the grind.
What about people who come here already married? Now for those unmarried you have to marry a Citizen to get a Green card. Marriage is a totally seperate thing and is not something that should be used solely for getting a GC (IMHO). Sorry but i do not agree that marrying a citizen is an easier way of doing ur immigration.

H1 and L1 laws:
We (employees) didn't write it.
Outsourcing companies didn't write it.
US government wrote these laws.
Why should an H1B pack his bag in zero days when he loses his job ? ( He doesn't even get time to sell his house, take care of his kid's education etc)
Why is an H1B employee asked to pay for social security and medicare when government knows that he cannot take advantage of these benefits ?
Why does different DMVs discriminate against H1Bs when issuing licenses ?
Mr Dick and co is ready to kick you all out of the country. It does not matter whether you are on H1 or L1.

Yaar chanakya.. did you choose your name or did your parents already knew that you will become Chanakya one day and post comments like this to piss off people.
If you didnt have money in ur pocket.. why the heck did you go for PHd.. now stop complaining about people who got a job and started working.. why dont you tell the truth to everyone that you didnt get a job after you completed MS and ultimately to keep yourself in US you opted for Phd.
I can understand the "PLIGHT" of your collegues and your manager who are working with you..
Man take a break and think before you write such stuff..

what if Obama does not win :) ..if something has to pass it will pass during this term. things and priorities change after a person gets elected. this is politics 101. I appreciate your optimism and if there is no spill over then EB3-I faces the worst case scenario. as usual the truth is somewhere in between. i.e. be ready for a long road ..if you get before that ..then good.
as others mentioned ..the only other thing you can do is support IV.

I follow politics too and politics is very complex for mortals like us. there are many obstacles for Obama ..his tax policies, some of the controversies and mr Rezko ..why do you think Clinton only suspended her campaign but did not close it completely ?
Guys,
It doesn't matter what the president wants to do as far as CIR is concerned. As far as CIR is concerned, George W begged it to be passed in both houses well before he became a lame duck. I don't see how the lawmakers on far right can come and align with the far left or even the lawmakers who are in the center. For the CIR to pass through without issues, Dems should control both houses with a big majority. Also, if you are thinking that Obama is going to win this, you are very well underestimating Mac. watch out for the GOP machine in the last 2 months and it will be a different ball game. Clinton lost because her campaign was over confident and by the time they realized they had a string of 10 bad states whose background does not suit her. Mac's campaign can't be over confident after they saw what happened. GOP is going to do its best to further divide the badly bruised Democratic party. Its few states that will decide this election and its difficult to carry states winning only the metropolitan areas. Obama won 5 counties of 90 some counties in OH. If his performance in general election is going to be the same, forget OH. Same situation in WV.
For now, I feel Obama is a great visionary and ideologue. No one knows whether he will achieve most of the things he is promising to do if he becomes the president. But he has been very logical and rational esp with the gas tax holiday. All said, he looks like a destiny's child. Imagine where he would have been if the Rev wright wreck came before the Iowa caucuses.
There are so many ifs and buts. our interests are best served with out the big vehicle CIR. If thats the only vehicle, we possibly are going to be held hostage.

A member-driven and membership-driven organization will not have to taunt members into contributing or shaming them to contributing, imho.
If we become verified and paying members, personal email messages can be sent out for the (less frrequent, perhaps) funding drives. A code of etiquette or something akin to it should be enforced that spells out the rules of participation in forums as well, and discourage such comments.
You pay the basic membership - you get on board. When extra funding is required, you do what you can - there's no extra pressure or shaming anyone into contributing.
There can be *plenty of other benefits*, and an organization sufficiently large enough can probably generate enough revenue to have at least 1 full time person on board coordinating stuff... or a bunch of volunteers and part-timers (for folks who have their EADs and are using it, this would be a chance to jump in... and help out).
jazz
I like the idea of an annual $100 fee to join.. that way all members have contributed.
Secondly, i think while a forum method is good, the Administrators should stop posting vitriolic messages ( For Ex: " I cannot believe people are not donating" / " you should be ashamed.." and such).. This creates a very childish image for this organization.
If there are 25k members and your funding drive is for $30k, why don't you accept $5 and $10 donations?.. Why only $100 or above?.. With 25k members, if we start a drive to donate $1 / member and only 1 in 10 respond, you will reach your funding goal.
My thoughts..

We all had a good time so far in US compared to the freshers .
It seems like any change in the immigration system is only going to land us in a worst position than we are in....
And looking at what is happening, I think it is naive to think we can influence the system to make it better for us.
Any noise we make seems to be making our opponents solidify and press us even harder.
I know this is not an upbeat comment that every IV member seem to expect, but this has been a depressing week, in an already depressing decade. :(
