I think it can actually create huge heartburn. This is not intended to allow filing I-485 before PD is available. Rather it is to introduce one more hoop to jump over. Now I-485 will be "By invitation" after you successfully complete pre-screen.
Picture this. your I-140 is approved. YOu fill the pre-screen registration. They are supposed to do backgrond, EVL, name check etc etc... During all of this, you did not actually file I-485. Suddenly your PD becomes current becuase DOS has moved dates forward so as not to waste Visas. Still you cannot file I-485 because your pre-screen is not complete.
Basically their processing bottleneck will be shifted to pre-screen and potentially take away the interim benefits of EAD and AP even if they would be otherwise qualified to file for 485.

my 140 was approved a week and a half back ..and i asked my attorney ..if my date was successfully ported..and he is refusing to divulge the information and telling me to contact my company..
1.) i know 140 is a employers prerogative and all that jazz..but should i not get a copy..or at least some basic information?
2.) Am i wrong is even asking for that information?

with the job loss report announced this morning (over 500k lost last month, and 1.9million lost overall) its unlikely this will come through. Too hot button an issue. Even if teh quota is increased, like in 2002/2003 its unlikely it will be filled.

That happened to me too. My new I94 was valid from the approval date, and not the one we asked for. No, you were not out of status as your H1 extension was pending. You should not have issues with it.

When My immigration came through, my family and I all flew down by air, stamped ourselves as Landed Immigrants and then came back to states.
You will have to give somebody's address at the airport and also apply for your PR card before you come back to states. Once you get your PR card then you are free to travel even by road passing the border post otherwise without the PR card you will have to apply for a visa every time you go to Canada. The PR card will be posted to the that somebody's house so that person can post it to the US. I am a landed immigrant since Feb 2005 but still live in states.
To maintain the PR status you have to be the country for 2 years.

This is Off-Topic, sorry about that, but this is the best forum i could think of to ask this:
My father-in-law is visiting us from India, and he is thinking of driving a car here. He drives in India and I think in a couple of weeks (with maybe 2-3 classes with some instructor) he should get the hang of driving. Are there any risks that anyone knows of with this? (if he makes a mistake and ends up in an accident I understan that we end up being personally liable and can even be sued if there is an injured party).

I have myself driven a lot in many states on B1/B2, All the car rental agencies on mostly international airports cater to visitors on B1/B2.When i came to US for the first time on business, i drove around 3000 miles just on weekends :-)
If the Locals DL of your FIL is not in english, you need a International Drivers Permit, from your country.IDP is just an english transalation of your local drivers licence,and is not valid without the original DL.
The only problem i see, is that your insurance would not cover him(mine required the authorized driver to have a US licence).if he just wants to drive for fun, you better rent him a car with CDW and Liability insurance.Its expensive but its safe.
And i personally don't agree that fines could be 3 times...all the silicon valley visitors would be screwed.

Prepaid taxis at the airport is the best. You dont have to haggle over prices, pay tips or commission or no such nonsense. Fixed rate based on distance. Govt prepaid and Fast track are good. Would suggest Fast track.. decent cars with decent prices.
Fasttrack is even recommended for local travel... reliable call taxi service.
As for hotels, if you are looking at hotels in and around 5 kms of Chennai Central railway station, you can look at areas of Egmore, Kilpauk and Nugambakkam. Aruna Inn in Nugambakkam is a decent 2-3 star. Try to find hotels in these areas and make a researvation thru makemytrip.com or yatra.com

I just checked that Nebraska is now processing cases from August 2007 for I 140 applications. Do these also indicate China and India?
My pd for I 140 is in July, and I am from india. Should I be able to make a query since the dates have gone past my PD?

I want to address this to everyone. Any organization needs a clear and precise Vision statement. Majority of the senior member complain that the people with green card and citizenship do not support immigration voice; then the question becomes what is our vision. If we confine ourselves to the benefit that we all should get green card, then what is the need for someone who has already got a green card to visit this web site. Humans are need based animals, whether you like it or not tomorrow if I get my Green Card (A big IF) it is very much likely that my visit to this website will be minimized. My priorities will be different. So core group should get a better vision statement which might address all immigrants.
The reason I came to immigration voice is slightly different, because I am still not convinced enough to accept that core group could do something which will make our law makers’ act different. I support immigration voice on a bigger picture, it unites all immigrants together, and the website provides me support to all my immigration need. For example, I can search the website and find information regarding visa stamping, H1 quota and what my fellow countrymen think about it. So my sincere advice to the core group is to create a vision statement which is much bigger than the green card issue and which will make sure all immigrant no matter with green card or not will visit our website. Make the vision statement visible in the website. You have much better exposure through this. I have to agree, I am writing this out of frustration :D , but to be honest, do not treat this website for green card retrogression alone, treat it as something bigger, which will address all immigrant needs.

I filed back in June, 07. I got second FP notice for my wife. Nothing for me so far and I am primary applicant.

Did you ever had problem in getting VISA or your case was sent for further review because of security reasons? I just want to understand if there were any abnormalities in your any visa approval(s).
