DEV-TEAM Jailbreak iOS 4.2/4.2.1 Update #3 ADVANCED TOPIC!! and HOW TO: Install Cydia Tweaks & Apps using Redsn0w 0.9.6b3

iPhone Dev Team has just released a new version of Redsn0w. The new version comes with OpenSSH that enables you to patch broken Cydia on iOS 4.2 and iOS 4.2.1. Anyway, we'll be back with how to guides after testing it.

Update #3:   (Warning: if you use the ultrasn0w unlock, please read no further…this doesn’t apply to you yet!) We’ve made some updates to redsn0w to make it easier for jailbreak developers (and tinkerers) to get their programs ready for 4.2.1.  As noted above, the public version of Cydia (and MobileSubstrate too!) is not 4.2.1-compatible.  redsn0w will now let you install your own custom bundles independent of Cydia (the bundle can actually be Cydia if you’ve compiled it on your own).  These bundles can be up to 15MB in size, and should be in the form of a gzip-compressed tar file.
The new redsn0w 0.9.6b3 is available at:

• OS X
• Windows

It’s very important that you get the file permissions and ownerships right in your custom redsn0w bundles.  To give you a practical example of such a bundle, here’s one that includes OpenSSH, OpenSSL, and the basic apt installer programs:

redsn0w has also been updated to recognize the 4.2.1GM IPSWs.  *However*, as noted above, the 4.2.x jailbreak is not yet untethered for most devices!  That means until someone like @comex comes up with a way to untether it, you must use redsn0w (or a similar utility) to boot your device into a jailbroken 4.2.1 state.   (The only exceptions to this are the iPhone3G, non-MC iPod touch 2G, and old-bootrom iPhone3GS.  redsn0w will jailbreak those untethered!)

With the above redsn0w and SSH bundle, jailbreak developers and tinkerers can jailbreak and SSH into their 4.2.1 devices, provided they’ve done a tethered boot (using redsn0w’s “Just boot tethered right now” option).

Note:  The Cydia that’s included in 0.9.6b3 is the same one as in 0.9.6b2, and so it will *not* work on 4.2.1.  Don’t try installing it on 4.2.1!  Instead, use the SSH bundle, or compile Cydia on your own.  If you’re familiar with the apt utilities, you can use “apt-get” to install many programs from the command line.  Be sure to do “apt-get update” first to refresh your sources!

PLEASE CONSIDER THIS AN ADVANCED TOPIC!!  It’s not meant for the masses because it involves rather nerdy things like command lines and tar files.  But for those who know how to use this new redsn0w feature, have fun!

Apt-get Install / Remove Packet is a tool to install/remove packets with debian apt-get.

About Apt-Get:

Advanced Packaging Tool, or APT, is a package management system used by Debian and its derivatives. APT was originally designed to work with .deb packages on Debian systems, but it has since been modified to work with RPM packages via apt-rpm, and to run on other operating systems such as Mac OS X (see fink). On systems with package management based on .deb, such as Debian, APT is a front-end for dpkg.

APT simplifies the process of installing and removing software on Unix systems, by automating the retrieval, (from the Internet, local network, or CD) the configuration, the compiling (sometimes) and the installation of software from APT sources.

There is no apt program per se; APT is a C++ library of functions that are used by several command line programs for dealing with packages, most notably apt-get and apt-cache.

APT front-ends can upgrade the system or specific packages. Packages can be installed or removed. When installing one or several packages, APT front-ends can list the dependencies of these packages, ask the administrator if packages recommended or suggested by newly installed packages should be installed too, automatically install dependencies and perform other operations on the systems packages to allow the installation of the packages. Similarly, to update one or several packages, front-ends can install, remove or update other packages.

APT is often hailed as one of Debians best features, giving Debian the reputation of being a "pain to install, but a joy to maintain", although with Debian 3.1 and its Debian-Installer, Debians installation might be too easy nowadays to keep this true.

HOW TO: Install Cydia Tweaks & Apps using Redsn0w 0.9.6b3

Earlier today we posted that iPhone Dev Team has released Redsn0w 0.9.6b3 with OpenSSH and APT patches which is really useful for app developers who wants to try their Cydia tweaks and jailbreak apps on iOS 4.2.1.

As you know, Cydia is still broken on iOS 4.2.1 and the new version is not out yet but with the latest version of Redsn0w, you can install jailbreak apps without Cydia installed on your iOS device. Your jailbreak-app package must be in gzip-compressed tar format that Redsn0w can read and also it must be around 15MB in size. The iPhone Dev Team already released OpenSSH package can be download from here which is used to install OpenSSH using the instructions below.

STEP 1: Download Redsn0w 0.9.6b3 (Windows - Mac OS X).

STEP 2: Your device must be on iOS 4.2.1, and you have to save .IPSW firmware of iOS 4.2.1 on your desktop (helpful link).

STEP 3: Once you download Redsn0w, launch it and click Browse then select the suitable iOS 4.2.1 .IPSW file for your iOS device so RedSn0w can recognize it.

STEP 4: In this new page, mark on “Install Custom Bundle” & “Just boot tethered right now” options. Then select the package you want to install as shown in the screenshots below:

STEP 5: After few minutes, the tool will recognize the package then click on Next and you will be guided to put your iOS device in DFU mode.

STEP 6: Once your device in DFU mode, it will reboot with SSH package installed. Now use Cyberduck (Mac OS X) or WinSCP (Windows) to SHH into your device.

From now on, you will need to boot using Redsn0w whenever your device is rebooted until comex make iOS 4.2.x jailbreak untethered. So, whenever you want to SSH into your device, you must first run your device in the “jailbroken state” on every reboot by using “Just boot tethered right now” option in Redsn0w.
